We’ve all been there—you’re in the middle of a scroll, and suddenly your connection starts acting like it’s the dial-up era. Naturally, the first thing you want to do is check how much data you have left. I use Lebara because it’s affordable, but man, trying to find my data balance yesterday felt like I was solving a Da Vinci Code puzzle.
After spending way too much time hitting dead ends, I’ve mapped out the “trial and error” journey I went through so you don’t have to waste your time like I did.
The “Dead Ends” I Encountered (My Failed Attempts)
Before I found the actual solution, I tried everything that seemed logical. Here is the “what-not-to-do” list based on my own frustrating experience:
1. The Global Standard Fail (*100#)
I started with the most common USSD code. Almost every network uses this to show a quick summary. So, I dialed it, expecting a nice summary.
Here is what I got instead:

My Experience: As you can see, all it gave me was my main balance (which was zero) and an option to buy more bundles. Totally unhelpful when you just want to know your remaining data.
2. The Random Google Codes Nightmare
I searched online and found a dozen different codes that supposedly “always work” for Lebara—*134#, *141#, etc.
When I tried those, my phone just gave me an “Invalid MMI Code” error. That’s when I realized how much outdated information is out there. It was infuriating.
The Methods That Actually Worked (Eventually)
After my “research” phase and getting thoroughly annoyed, I found that there are actually three reliable ways to get the job done. Here is the breakdown:
1. The Instant Winner: The USSD Code *137#
This is the shortcut that finally saved my sanity. If you are stuck right now, do this:
-
How to do it: Just open your dialer and type
*137#, then hit the call button. -
Why it’s better: Unlike
*100#, this code specifically queries your active data bundles.
Here is what finally popped up on my screen:

My Experience: A small pop-up appeared on my screen almost instantly showing my remaining MBs. It’s significantly faster than waiting for a text message. If you are in a rush, *137# is the only way to go.
2. The SMS Method (38885)
I also wanted to try the official text method to see if it was any good. If you prefer having the info in your text messages, this is how you do it:
-
How to do it: Compose a new message with the word DATA and send it to 38885.
-
The Reality Check: While it is reliable, it is not instant. I had to wait about 2-3 minutes for the reply. Also, make sure you have a decent signal, or the text won’t send.
Here is the conversation in my messaging app:

This method works well, and as you can see, the balance (4.87 GB) matches the USSD result perfectly. It’s nice because you have a record in your inbox.
Summary: What I Learned (and You Should Too)
Don’t be like me and waste twenty minutes trying to guess codes. The internet is full of generic advice that won’t work for your specific bundle.
-
If you need to know right now, dial
*137#. It’s the fastest “human” shortcut. -
If you have time, text “DATA” to 38885. It gives you a reliable written record.
Lebara’s affordability is great, but their system can be moody if you don’t know the exact trick! Stop guessing, start dialing, and get back to your browsing.
